After the unfortunate delay of Cyberpunk from September to November and my insatiable desire to play this game, I completely forgot that a new gameplay trailer was being dropped on the 25th, however, apart from getting a deeper look into the games core-mechanics and how much time we will have to dump into this game, I came away with a more burning craving to play Cyberpunk 2077. So, I thought, why not exert that passion looking deeper into the new gameplay trailer and the reviews of people who played the first 4 hours of the game!
Spoilers for the first 4 hours of the game do not go past this point
For anyone who has not seen the trailer, here it is.
Trailer Breakdown ---
The trailer was nothing too special; just the same old run-of-the-mill trailer. It gave us a good look into the gameplay, new story elements, and introduced a few new characters. It addressed the new releases date, with it now being on the 19th of November instead of September the 17th. Apart from that, it didn't give us much that we did not already know or have already seen (it's still, however, got me more hyped for the game)
--- I love the part in the trailer; at the 1.15 mark, where she says "ideally no bodies, not one." and we then cut to them cocking their gun and shooting some fuckers; made me laugh.
Of course, as we know some people have played the first 4 hours of Cyberpunk and with their insight into the game and what they played, we can take-away what to expect from the upcoming game.
Here's my take-away from what other people learned from their first 4 hours of Cyberpunk gameplay
Number One: Origin Story's ---
Possibly one of the coolest parts of the character customisation is the choice to pick the "origin story" for your V. Want to have the Nomad life? starting your life on the outskirts of Night City surrounded by the baron wasteland; go ahead. Possibly you prefer to live the city-life; you're a street kid, living in the urban side of the city, navigating the slums for survival - not for you? - okay! Fancy the high-life? Cooperate goon navigating the cutthroat world of sky-high political company's; your world your choice - personally, I'll be choosing the Nomad life, starting at the bottom and working my way up by murdering and stealing from whoever deserves it in the process of achieve the overall narrative of Cyberpunk.
Number Two: Brain Dancing ---
The premise of brain dancing is relativity simple. You are reliving another person's perspective, feeling everything they felt in that moment. The brain dancing; I presume would have to be activated by the user and be recorded by their implants. However, where brain dancing becomes an important in-game mechanic is the ability to enter brain dance editing mode, like spectator mode in other games you are able to view the scene from a distance, flying around and inspecting objects in the world that the original user missed. This will allow for the gathering of information and i would imagine in a sleazy dystopian future for other forms of entertainment.
This scene is in the trailer and most likely will be a mechanic we'll become familiar with using because it's in the early hours of the gameplay. It's also where we are introduced to Judy Alvarez (the beautiful female in the trailer thumbnail and below) or my nickname for her "13".
Her character is a bit of a mystery so far, however, she seems to be helping V at this point and some fans are hoping she is a romance option in-game but i guess these are question that will be answered in November.
Number Three: The Four Distinct Art Styles ---
Throughout every location in the sprawling metropolis of Nigh City you will find the four in-game distinct art styles; each with it's own identity and history, from buildings, people, clothing and technology's Cyberpunk will use these art styles to formulate the massive beautiful world around the player.
There's kitsch an expression of happiness and recovery, Kitsch was a counter-cultural movement against Entropism, therefore the colours are bright and in your face.
Entropism an expression of "necessity over style" one of the oldest of the four styles and draws its roots from a period of austerity, colours are dark utilising blacks and greys.
Neo-Militarism is for the rich and powerful - power-dressing; the colours are dark but sleek, practical also luxurious and is separate to Entropism.
Finally, we have Neon-Kitsch, an appearance only available to the ultra-rich, were Kitsch and Neon-Kitsch differ is Neon-Kitsch appropriates the surface-level of Kitsch without acknowledging its cultural motivation.
These were just a few of the additional features, game mechanics and aesthetics that were shown in the trailers and experienced with 4 hours of gaming time. Cyberpunks world is going to be one of massive detail and expansive gameplay and 4 hours is not enough to dump into a game like this.
The game feels like it is going to be diversive, giving the player as much customisation options as possible. Want your character to be gun-nuts, running and gunning your way through the world of Night city? Have fun! More of the quiet type, sneaking and dumping enemies into hidden spots to progressively chip away at their defensive until you have achieved your overall mission? Silence it is...Okay, so neither of those are your type, fine! Why not use your opponents technology against them by setting them on fire, shutting off their weapons or crushing them whilst doing a bench press; it's all your choice.
This is just a look at the combat and how you choose to tackle any situation you are given, the game gives more options outside of combat and what visually your character will look like.
Cyberpunk will introduce a variety of visual character customisation - being an RPG you would expect a lot of visuals and they do not disappoint; from 30 choices for hair-styles to genital customisation, Cyberpunk will literally let you create every inch of your character.
You can choose to play as a male or female and as CD Projects Red Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz responded to Gamasutra when he was asked about transgender and non-binary character customisation in Cyberpunk; this is..."one of the things [they] want to do in the final game,"with the ultimate aim of providing "as many options of customisation in the beginning of the game as we can." (Quote gathered from Screenrants article) Now Tomaszkiewicz in this statement was very vague and with 4 months to go the possibility of transgender and non-binary characters in Cyberpunk may be an option. "The idea is to mix all of those up, to give them to the players, as they would like to build it. Same goes for the voice. We wanted to separate this out, so the players can choose it freely. This is something we are still working on, it's not as easy as it sounds. This is one part of it. In terms of how we depict the characters within the setting itself, of course, yes, we are paying a lot of attention to it; we do not want anyone to feel like we are neglecting this or treating it wrongly." CD Project Red seem to be holding back on revealing too much information about this character customisation option; however, there's still is a slight possibility that we will not see this option in the final product of the game but that option is all up to CD Project Red.
Finally, Cyberpunk will introduce body modifications, these will play as in-game mechanics allowing the player to utilise these mods for combat advantages and as character visuals.
Adding mods to improve weapon accuracy, HUD capabilities and more, these visuals and in-game mechanics will allow for hundreds of character customisation for the player. In Cyberpunk your character will inhibit your personality and in a dystopian future ran by ruthless companies your character and choices you make will impact the story and the world around you. Cyberpunk 2077 will truly encapsulate the ideology of RPG's, giving you, the player full control of your in-game world.
Cyberpunk will hopefully be the best game of 2020 and live up to its eight years of hype.
